RTA Driver Knowledge Test
HEAVY VEHICLE LICENCE UPGRADES
Class (LR) Light Rigid Licence Upgrade
Light Rigid (LR): Any motor vehicle with a GVM of more than 4.5t but not more than 8t. Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9t GVM. Also includes vehicles with a GVM up to 4.5t which carry more than 12 adults including the driver.

Class (MR) Medium Rigid Truck Licence Upgrade
Truck Medium rigid (MR): any motor vehicle with 2 axles and a GVM of more than 8t. Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9t GVM.
Age tenure requirements for learner drivers:
- Before you can learn to drive this type of vehicle you must be at least 17 years and must hold a licence (other than a learner's licence) in NSW or elsewhere. Can be any class of licence other than rider's licence.
Age and tenure requirements for fully licensed drivers
- Before the MR driver's licence can be issued you must be at least 18 and must have held a licence (other than a learner's licence) to drive a vehicle other than a motorcycle for a period of, or for periods totalling, 1 year.

Age and tenure requirements:
· You must have held a Class C, LR, MR licence or equivalent for 2 years or more. NOTE: You are not permitted to upgrade to a HR licence while you hold a P1 car licence.
