DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE (click on the link to access a .pdf information sheet)

This course is designed to modify the operator’s driving techniques through theoretical and practical sessions. To achieve this, we conduct a theory session and a two hour practical training and assessment.

Course Topics

Topics covered in the theory component of the course include:

New and Old Road Laws

Participants will discuss new and old road laws and the most common abuses of road laws.

Vehicle Sympathy 

When drivers respect their vehicle and following the proper circle checks plus service routines, the vehicle will be safe, reliable and cost efficient.

Road Craft versus Car Craft

Participants will look at their driving within the road system.

Road Craft is a driver’s competence in participation and interaction with other road users.

Car Craft relates to a person who drives in a reckless manner taking little consideration of other road users.

Seven Safe Driving Strategies

The following visual search techniques provide drivers with ways to actively observe the traffic scene to assist safe driving decisions.

Attitudes and Driving Behaviour

The driver of a vehicle must display the right attitude in all situations. If the wrong attitude is expressed, a driver can abuse his fellow road users, and the vehicle for which he is responsible.

Reducing Vehicle Accidents

Participants learn how to identify the potential causes of accidents and how to drive defensively, reducing the number of vehicle accidents.

Fatigue Management

Driving hours and the monitoring of the driver’s fatigue is discussed. Participants will review their own lifestyle and establish strategies to manage their fatigue.

This course is currently under review to meet the requirements of the National Training Package TLI 07, the National Competency Standards for the transport and distribution industry.
